Pumpkin Decorating

 The other day Rosie came home from the store with one of those little decorated pumpkins. She fell in love with its little pink and green eyes and its sparkly witchy hat. She decided she wanted to make one out of the white pumpkin we got at the farm stand.

It was pretty easy, really. First she colored a face on the pumpkin. It's always more fun to do crafts outside if you can.

 

While Rosie was coloring she had me cut a witch's hat out of a paper plate. I cut out a circle, then made a cut towards the center and folded and stapled it to make a cone. After that we colored it pink.

After that it was time to glue on the hat. I had to trim the stem a little to make it fit. Using Elmer's glue, we glued on the hat, with a tuft of pom pom tassels stuck underneath for the hair.

And there we had it- another witchy pumpkin!

October is for Pumpkins

Now that October is here, everything is PUMPKINS!
(I think October is all of our favorite month of the year :) )

Rowan and I have been browsing through Pinterest, looking for pumpkin crafts we could do together... we love doing our *projects* together...
He wanted to do this stuffed paper bag pumpkin (we've done this one MANY times before)... pretty easy~ just stuff the paper bag with torn crumpled paper bags, tie at the top with raffia or jute, and paint! You can add construction paper leaves / pumpkin vines after that.

Next we thought we'd try these toilet paper tube / strips of paper pumpkins~ they were a lot harder than I thought! For some reason there was no orange construction paper so we colored orange paper then cut the strips & I stapled them to the TP tubes. Then we added our stems & leaves. They turned out a little crunchy, but much like the shape of a realistic pumpkin :)

Carving A Pumpkin

 One of the first pumpkins we got this year was this beautiful white one. We were playing different scenes from Curious George's Halloween Boo Fest, and the kids decided they wanted to carve a pumpkin like George and The Man in the Yellow Hat. We had a little time before rest time to do something, so we decided to go for it! This pumpkin was very easy to get the seeds out, and the kids both did a great job helping. They were also unusually behaved for that time of day, so we had a lot of fun together.

October Fun!

Happy October, everybody!

Boy, this is one of our favorite times of year around here. It's just like one big celebration all the way till Christmas!

We made an October calendar using magazine cutouts to collage a paper bag rectangle.  Rowan gets to put up an orange pumpkin number every day!

We played "Bobbing for Apples" using ladles to scoop up ball "apples" and place them in a bucket!

We made a cool spider web to hang on our wall while watching The Magic School Bus: Spins a Web!

We've been eating popcorn for our show-time snack each day!

We did a laser light show using plastic jack-o-lanterns!

The kids have been "belly swinging" everyday, guesstimating how many mph they're swinging!

Rowan and I made cars characters out of play-dough! (Frank is eating his corn.)

Rowan lined up the pumpkin family: Rowan Pumpkin, Fynn Pumpkin, Mama Pumpkin, Papa Pumpkin, and Grandpa Pumpkin!

 Fynn made a giant clock on the kitchen floor!

We also posted a YouTube video about how to make licorice play-dough and spooky spiders!
